First Things First

Those of you who know me well know that I'm an audiophile. Those of you who know me very very well know that I'm not much of a writer. Today I decided to start trying (It just took me three tries to spell "decided" to give you an idea...Thank God for spell check!). I decided *got it* on my way home today that I would try this blog thing as an outlet from my monotonous mathematical lifestyle. I'm an electrical engineering major and a math tutor. Can you say nerd? I realized today that I hadn't written a journal since 1991 and I'd like to start again. I'm now on the eve of my 26th birthday so that's roughly 7000 days I'd need to fill in. Where to start? I must be retrospective. Fortunately, since I'm such an audiophile, I realized over the years I've been building all my experiences into the music I listen to. I'm one of those people who can hear a song and give the year it was made, the year I heard it, what was going in the world when I was listening to it and most importantly what was going on in my life. I though to myself that my iTunes library IS my journal. It would just be a matter of freeing the story from the songs.

Do you remember this scene from High Fidelity?
Dick: I guess it looks as if you're reorganizing your records. What is this though? Chronological?
Rob: No...
Dick: Not alphabetical...
Rob: Nope...
Dick: What?
Rob: Autobiographical.
Dick: No fucking way.
Rob: And If I want to find the song "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac...I have to remember that I bought it for someone in the fall of 1983 pile, but didn't give it to them for personal reasons.

This scene is exactly what this blog is all about.

So I'm gonna play a game. We're gonna play a game. I'm going to set iTunes to random and what ever song comes out I'm going to write everything that comes to mind. I'll write about that album its on, what i like/don't like about it, where I heard it and any strong memories that come to mind. I'm gonna be fair. No matter how embarrassing or painful it is to write about something that a song reminds me of, it will be here. If it's boring it will be here too. Sharing is caring so may there will be little surprises here and there. So stay tuned and experience The Audio Autobiographical Me. I have 20697 songs at this point so this could take the rest of my life. -Gabe

  1. haha that's awesome man! :) I'll be reading the rest of the entries. Perhaps you can talk about the whole album rather than by the song, unless the song itself rather than the album is of special significance. I got a log too, but its more normal, and not as music inclined. I started writing in it when I moved out of El Paso. Check it out and comment it if you have the time(ruizjesus.blogspot.com)
